Program Set-Up
How is Dancing Classrooms integrated into a school?
- Dancing Classrooms is a 10 week-20 session, 45-50 minute training program applied to all of the fifth grade classes during the school day in participating schools. It is not an Afterschool program nor is it intended for targeted fifth graders.
- Prior to the program being implemented at a school, the Dancing Classrooms Monterey Bay School Liaison will meet with the school principal, fifth grade classroom teachers, PE and/or Art teachers to explain how the Dancing Classrooms process will unfold.
- We need a clean, well-lit space with optimum dimensions of 30'x40', cleared of all desks, chairs, and objects. A gym or auditorium stage is ideal. The space should be quiet, contained and away from foot traffic.
- It is best if the floor is hard wood or masonite/linoleum; no carpeting. A boom box with speakers sufficient to fill the space and an electrical outlet is required. An extension cord may also be necessary.
Pierre Dulaine addressing students in NYC
- All 5th courses take place in schools.
- 10 week program is implemented.
- At the of the 10 week program, each school holds a Culminating Event. All of the fifth graders put on a performance for the other students and faculty. Parents and other family members are
of course encouraged to attend.
- After the Culminating Event, schools that are interested in competing in the Colors of the Rainbow Team Match (as highlighted in Mad Hot Ballroom) choose 12 students (six ladies and six gentlemen) to represent their school. These students are not necessarily the “best” dancers and are jointly chosen by the Teaching Artists and school personnel.
- Competing schools move through a quarter, semi, and finals process.
